It can be infuriating to listen to different people give their takes on political issues and realize how full of crap everyone really is. That being said, the pervasiveness of skewed social and political commentary makes someone who remains objective and factual in their approach all the more rare…so perhaps it could help me stand out a bit.
Famed actress and known democratic loyalist Meryl Streep sparked some controversy at the Golden Globes on Sunday when she gave her acceptance speech of the Cecil B. DeMille award. In a section of her speech, Streep decided to take the opportunity to make a political statement denouncing President-Elect Donald Trump, specifically for his alleged mocking of reporter Serge Kovaleski whose right arm is disabled.
What’s astonishing is the level of hypocrisy and immaturity that Trump and many of his advocates have shown in response to Streep’s speech. Trump’s campaign manager and full-time media defense attorney Kellyanne Conway talked about Streep’s speech with CNN’s Chris Cuomo. Cuomo criticized Trump for denying that his gesture was directed towards Kovaleski’s disability, and Conway reacted saying that she believes Trump is telling the truth. She said to Cuomo, “You always want to go by what’s come out of his mouth rather than look at what’s in his heart…You can’t give him the benefit of the doubt on this?” Right Kellyanne, just like you and the rest of the right gave Hillary benefit of the doubt when she claimed that her 33,000 deleted emails were strictly personal and did not contain information that she thought would result in incrimination. Maybe you should look into what was in her heart.
Conservative internet sensation Tomi Lahren was among many right wing pundits to lash out at Streep for her speech. Lahren put out a series of tweets scolding Streep. In response to Streep’s claim that “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners,” Lahren tweeted a particularly notable comment saying, “These Hollywood elites wouldn’t know average, every day hard-working Americans if we bit them in the ass. #GoldenGlobes.” Tomi, you make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to regurgitate the same nonsensical conservative talking points day in and day out. Any rational definition of the term “average hard-working American” would suggest that you are far from it. It is also interesting how you so defiantly demonize the same Hollywood industry that both your main man Donald Trump and divine Republican godsend Ronald Reagan were a part of. Look, is most, if not all of Hollywood out of touch with working-class Americans and the issues they face? It probably is. But someone like Tomi Lahren declaring herself as an outsider and an “every day American” is a good enough bit to close out any comedy show.
It is one thing for members of the right wing media to hypocritically attack Streep for her speech, but there was no way that Trump would let a small smear by an actress get under his skin, right? In the profound words of our President-Elect…WRONG!!! Of all of Trump’s twitter rants, his response to this speech is one of my favorites. He called Streep “a Hillary flunky who lost big” and said she is “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood.” Yes, he put a hyphen in overrated. Not only is it ridiculous to call the illustrious Meryl Streep overrated, but Trump himself said to the Hollywood reporter in 2015, “Meryl Streep is an excellent actress; she’s a fine person, too.”
But Trump’s contradiction of his statements regarding his personal feelings for Streep is not even the point. Trump ran a campaign on promoting honest free speech and rejecting the idea of being politically correct to prevent others from being offended, and he did so effectively. But he is now about to be President and needs a safe space from Meryl Streep. Are you kidding me? After a campaign of saying what he wanted no matter who he offended, he is letting a criticism from a Hollywood actress get under his skin to the point that he needs to discredit her talent after lauding it just over a year ago. By comparison, look at how Obama reacted to rock star Ted Nugent repeatedly calling for him to be tried for treason and hung. He couldn’t have cared less. Rather than respond to every person who publically criticized him, Obama focused on doing his job, whereas Trump can’t seem to let one shred of criticism go without retaliation.
Trump supporters are going to chastise Streep for her remarks while Trump opponents are going to depict her as a hero. If it were instead a guy like Vince Vaughn giving an acceptance speech in which he expressed his excitement for Trump’s presidency and his hatred for Obama, I imagine the narratives on both sides would be very different. That just shows how full of it everyone is. Everyone pretends like they have true morals and ideas that they stick to when all they really are is a bunch of mindless cheerleaders for their party.
